Let's talk skin Lesson 1 - The Basics

Hello and welcome back to my beauty blog! Todays post is the first of my new series all about the skin. In this series I'll be covering skincare, waxing and everything in between. Today's post is all about the basics. Learning what the skin is made up of and why it's there. Lets get started!

All my skin lessons will be about the integumentary system. The integumentary system consists of the hair, glands, skin and nails.

Why do we have skin?
To understand how to care for your skin it's important to know why it's there in the first place. Our skin has 6 main functions, they are:

Protection (Our skin is a barrier between our internal workings and the outside environment. )
Sensation (Our body can detect different stimuli such as pressure, pain and temperature through our skin)
Body Temperature (The skin regulates your body temperature e.g. sweat)
Excretion (Some of our skins excretion allows for body temperature changes however our skin also allows for the loss of certain wastes from the body)
Vitamin D (Our skin provides production of vitamin D from exposure to ultraviolet radiation- the sun)
Immunity (Our skin contains cells that fight infection on damaged skin)

What is our skin made of?
Our skin is made up of 3 layers, the Epidermis, Dermis and Subcutaneous Fat layer. I'll go into further detail on the different layers/hair/sebaceous glands in the relevant posts.

As this is my first post in this new series, to add a bit more fun I've created a list of random but interesting facts about the skin:

1. Your sebum glands (face oils) increase around 10x at about age 10.
2. The endocrine and reproductive systems have an enormous effect on the skin.
3. There are 5 layers of the Epidermis.
4. When men complain that waxing/ tweezing hurts them more there is some science to back them up. The bulb of the hair follicle is often thicker in men than females and therefore can be more painful to remove.

Thank you so much for reading my first installment in this new series! I hope you enjoyed/ found it educational. See you in the next post!
